But in the end, it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. - Samwise Gamgee

Therapy with Joshua

My therapeutic style is warm, compassionate, nonjudgemental and practical. I bring curiosity to each session and aim to create a space where you feel safe to be fully yourself, to laugh, cry, vent, reflect or sit in silence if that is what is needed. I will always meet you where you are at, and while I will gently challenge you when I believe it is helpful, I will not push you before you are ready. I believe in delivering evidence based therapy in a way that feels real, relatable and easy to understand. Therapy should not take itself too seriously, but it should take you seriously.

I want you to know that I am in your corner. I am genuinely invested in your life and your struggles, and my hope is that you feel supported at every step of the journey. I value trust, honesty and authenticity, not perfection. You will not be expected to tell me everything right away, but when you are ready, I will be there to listen without judgement and always with compassion.

While I often use cognitive behavioural therapy as a foundation, my sessions tend to blend that structure with a more human, conversational approach. I like to keep things collaborative and flexible, tailoring the work to fit your needs, your pace and what matters most to you. I am open to working with any and all client groups, and I will always be honest if I believe you would benefit from the experience or expertise of another therapist.

My goal is never to keep you in therapy for therapy’s sake, but to make sure you are getting the best possible support for your needs. While I have worked across a wide range of presentations in both hospital and outpatient settings, some of my most meaningful work has been with young men who are new to therapy and with boys on the spectrum. I also bring my love of music into the room when it fits — I am a musician myself and a self-confessed nerd, and I find these parts of who I am often help clients feel more comfortable being fully themselves too.

Joshua’s Experience & Qualifications

Joshua Keane is a Provisional Psychologist currently completing a Master of Clinical Psychology. He holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science and an Honours degree in Psychology. Before beginning formal clinical training, Joshua spent six years working as a psychosocial disability coach, supporting individuals with complex mental health needs to build capacity, navigate services and pursue meaningful goals. This experience laid the foundation for his collaborative and person-centred approach to therapy.

Over the past four years, Joshua has worked across both inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, providing individual and group therapy informed by evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and music-informed CBT. He has supported clients presenting with a wide range of challenges including mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, substance use, autism spectrum presentations and personality vulnerabilities.

Joshua is currently completing a research thesis exploring the reasons why people engage in nonsuicidal self-injury and how these reasons may affect their recovery and wellbeing over time. His project uses a well-known psychological assessment tool to better understand the different functions self-injury can serve, and how these might be linked to whether someone is likely to stop or continue the behaviour. The research aims to contribute to more targeted and effective support for people who self-injure and is planned for publication in late 2026.
